When you come over to my house be warned. I have a “living room. It is exactly that: a living room. we do all our “living” in that room.
There are – on most days-
- toys all over the floor
- DVD’s and Video Games on the tv table and high surfaces
- Dust bunnies and fluffy bunnies under my couch
- artwork drying
- every single “surface” covered with some sort of book, paper, clutter item
This is, as I mentioned, on most days. I clean it up but it still seems to look like that 15 minutes later. Amazing how that works eh?
So this week I am trying to tackle the toys that clutter the floor in my living room. You know the ones. The random headband that fits on the pony with the sparkly blue hair. The Gold Lame shoe that fits on Bell. The tiny Quincy that fits in Rocket. These random little parts that go with something. You find them, and sometimes put them in your pocket for later so you can put them with the rest of the stuff they go with.
I have tried to put all the individual items in little zip lock sandwich bags so I can keep them with each other. I am not sure if that is working though.
Some of these things are just big and cumbersome like the shape sorting blocks that I seem to find everywhere.
Anyhoo. So yesterday we spent the entire afternoon cleaning up all the toys from the living room. We brought up the toy box and put it in Sunshine’s room. Now Sunshine and Loveliness have matching toy boxes in their rooms.
This morning I took a shopping bag and asked Loveiness to choose 5 toys and one book to put in the bag. I also asked her to choose the same for Sunshine since she is so little and probably would not be able to choose the ones she wanted. We brought the bag downstairs and at lunch time we are going to collect the toys and choose new 5’s for the afternoon. At bed time we are going to pack them all up and bring them back upstairs.
I am hoping that this will encourage them to play with toys that they otherwise overlook. So far this morning it hat done just that. The little toy cars that light up and make noise were a big hit today. I am sure “they” were thrilled to get so much attention. We will also see if this helps them to make decisions on what they want to play with, learn a little about how choices work and help them with tidying up and putting their toys away.
As with everything, I am flying by the seat of my pants. Lets see how this works. I would also love to hear about what you have done or do to keep toys where they belong. Please comment, I love comments and always write back
